This route follows the St. Lawrence River for miles of scenic views and great riding. Cross into the U.S. at the Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge and head to the Frederic Remington Art Museum in Ogdensburg, which houses a comprehensive collection of Remington's artwork, including sculptures, paintings and his masterworks.
From the Museum, follow Route 37 south toward Morristown, which parallels the shoreline of the historic St. Lawrence River. Grab a bite to eat at Bedrock the Café, just south of the St. Lawrence State Park. Just past Morristown, connect to Route 12 and continue riding south through Jacques Cartier State Park – a great place to stretch your legs on a nature walk. Ride around Chippewa Bay, home of Riverbay Adventure Inn offering boat and kayak rentals, as well as charming accommodations on the water.
Ride to Alexandria Bay, a vibrant town offering an array of unique attractions, dining and waterfront lodging options. Park your bike and hop aboard Uncle Sam Boat Tours and sail out to Heart Island, home of Boldt Castle. Tour the castle, and head back to Alex Bay for a tour of Dark Island Spirits, a distillery, winery and tasting room.
From Alexandria Bay, continue south on Route 12, stopping at Keewaydin Point State Park to the Village of Clayton. Stop for a few hours or a few days to enjoy scenic boat tours, several 1000 Islands regional wineries and wine trails, and the plethora of art centers and museums. Catch an outstanding performance at the Clayton Opera House, and take a boat out to Singer Castle on Dark Island, one of the crown jewels of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Visitors can even spend the night in the Castle's Royal Suite, and plenty of lodging options are available in Clayton. Don't miss the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, which houses and extensive exhibit of antique wooden boats.
From Clayton, head east on Route 12 to just north of Watertown, and connect to Route 11 via Route 283. Head North, through the Village of Evans Mills, to Philadelphia and Antwerp, home of Fort Drum Military Reservation. In Gouverneur, enjoy a bite to eat or continue on Route 11, through rural farmland and rolling hills to Canton. Two universities are located within the Village, St. Lawrence University and SUNY Canton, and the vibrant village offers lovely parks, museums, restaurants and historic attractions.
In Canton, head west on Route 68 toward Ogdensburg to complete this loop.
Ogdensburg- Frederic Remington Art Museum (1861-1909) is best known for his art depicting the cowboys, soldiers and Native Americans of the Old West. A native of Canton, New York, Remington found inspiration in these subjects from an early age.
